Steigerwald Lake Refuge Loop Hike

Overview

The Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge contains more than 1,000 acres of wetlands, cottonwood thickets, and grassland habitats. After a two-year closure, the refuge reopened to the public on May 1st, 2022, after the completion of a massive restoration project intended to rehabilitate historic seasonal wetlands, restore wildlife and fish habitat, and prevent flooding of nearby industrial land. The landscape here will change seasonally as water levels rise and fall and the half a million planted trees and shrubs mature. This easy lollipop loop hike will take you through part of the wildlife refuge using a new dike and connecting with the old Gibbons Creek Wildlife Art Trail. Note that a section of the latter trail is closed between October 1st and April 30th to protect waterfowl. The rest of the trail system is open all year, but some areas of trail may become flooded in the spring.
