A scramble along this Columbia Hills rim, composed of Columbia River Basalts that were faulted and folded during and after the lava flows, will offer sweeping views across the bend in the Columbia at The Dalles to Mount Hood . Do not cross the fence line that runs up from the Stacker Butte Trailhead as off-trail hiking is prohibited in the Columbia Hills Natural Area Preserve, a sensitive botanical area. The rimrock here is the site of a rattlesnake den and former ranch owners reported killing "hundreds" of the snakes. The den itself was dynamited by the Reuters, who owned the ranch for 40 years until 1975. However, rattlesnakes are still common here, so watch your step and pay attention to their warnings!
