Ponytail Falls

Overview

Ponytail Falls (sometimes called Upper Horsetail Falls) is on Horsetail Creek just above Horsetail Falls . Like nearby Oneonta Falls and many of the falls in Silver Falls State Park , Ponytail Falls displays the results of millions of years of geologic activity. Firs, a basalt lava flow buried a softer layer of rock and soil. Then, water and winter ice removed the softer material below, creating a cavern of sorts. The Horsetail Falls Trail #438, here also the Gorge Trail #400, runs behind the falls in a deeply incised overhang.
