Two Chiefs Trail Hike

Overview

The Two Chiefs Trail is an old logging railroad grade that became an abandoned jeep road. For many years, the route was used and maintained by ATV enthusiasts. After the area became part of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, ATVs were banned, and the tread has seen use as an unofficial trail that takes you to the base of Table Mountain and then on to Greenleaf Creek, with the upper tiers of Greenleaf Falls a rugged bushwhack above. The highlight of the hike is the open area below the cliffs of Table Mountain and Heartbreak Ridge , the two big prominences on the latter known as the Two Chiefs. A December 2007 landslide, which spills half a mile down the slope, is just beyond the Greenleaf Creek. A more recent landslide, on the east bank of Greenleaf Creek, has made any efforts to go beyond the creek or indeed up to Greenleaf Falls far more difficult.
