Shedd Camp Shelter Hike

Overview

The Chimney Peak Trail #3382 is a gateway trail to the little-known Middle Santiam Wilderness although most visitors beginning at the Chimney Peak Trailhead only hike a short distance to two popular attractions: the Shedd Camp Shelter and, just below it, the scenic, bouldery stretch of the Middle Santiam River at Shelter Falls . You'll get more solitude if you continue on into the wilderness (see the Donaca Lake via Chimney Peak Trail Hike ) as the Shelter Falls area is a very popular summer swimming hole. It's a great spot for a visit with kids, but you need to be very careful around the rocky defiles on the river. If you're doing a little overnighter, your best bet is mid-week, camping either at the shelter or on a cobbled bar by the river.
