The Santiam Wagon Road functioned as a link between the Willamette Valley and Central Oregon between the years 1865 and 1939. The wagon road charged a toll until 1915, when it was turned over to the state of Oregon. Originally, the wagon road was almost 400 miles long, and stretches of the road in the Willamette and Deschutes national forests have been preserved. Stagecoaches, cattlemen and private travelers took this route across the Cascades. This description addresses just a small segment of this historic route.
