Two short loops at the western end of the Wild and Scenic section of the Illinois River are connected by a fairly new Forest Service trail that parallels the river and follows a miner’s ditch for part of the way. Siskiyou endemic plants abound, and the cataracts at Little Illinois River Falls are a worthy destination. The route of the hike is part of the Eight Dollar Mountain Botanical Area. You can make this all much shorter (and avoid a lot of poison oak) by parking at the Little Falls Trailhead and taking the one-mile loop down to the falls from there. You can also walk back to your car along the road and cut a quarter mile off the described hike by exercising that option.
