The extensive marshes of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge provide food, rest, and nesting habitat for a great variety of bird life. Seasonal fluctuations mean that in winter and spring there is more open water (much of which freezes over in the dead of winter), while in summer and fall there is more of a sea of vegetation, predominately willows, sedges, rushes, bulrushes, and cattails. The short trail described here takes you to a basalt rimrock overlook that gives a vantage point over one of these marshlands.
