On some lists, China Cap , at 8,656 feet, is the 50th highest peak in Oregon. The top of the mountain is capped by layers of basalt laid over much older intrusions of white granite. This is not a difficult ascent, with only a half mile of off-trail travel from China Cap ’s west saddle . The approach is via the well-graded, though often dusty, Elk Creek Trail #1944 and then the China Ridge Trail #1906. Snow is usually melted out by the end of July. Views from the top of China Cap encompass almost every major peak in the Wallowas as well as the Elkhorn Range to the west.
