Barnes Butte Hike

Overview

The city of Prineville lies near the northern edge of a true supervolcano, now manifested by the landforms of the Crooked River Caldera. The Crooked River itself bisects the caldera, and rhyolitic prominences around its rim include Smith Rock, Gray Butte, Grizzly Mountain, the Powell Buttes, and, in Prineville itself, Barnes Butte . The volcano last erupted about 29 ½ million years ago, and from the summit of Barnes Butte , you can scope out the spread of the caldera and its rim as well as enjoy views farther to the Cascades and the Ochocos. The beginning section of this route was paved in 2023.
