This outing takes advantage of the Wallowa Lake Tramway to allow for a fairly strenuous day hike on a high ridge with three peaks over 9,000 feet, including Aneroid Mountain , the 9th highest peak in Oregon and 3rd highest in the Wallowas. Of course, you can choose a shorter outing that takes you only to one or both of the other two, East Peak and Hidden Peak . Beyond the well-constructed trails at Mount Howard , you’ll be on user trails or heading cross-country, but the route sticks to the open ridge, so you’re not at risk of getting disoriented. Views are spectacular all the way, and from various vantage points you’ll get to see panoramas of the entire Wallowa Mountain range as well as east to the Seven Devils of Idaho. To do the whole hike, it’s best that you take one of the earliest trams to be sure you’re back in time for the last one. (Most people will take 5 - 6 hours for this hike, so July and August, when the tramway runs for a longer duration, are the optimal months.)
