The several forks of National Creek all arise within Crater Lake National Park and coalesce east of 40-foot National Creek Falls . Their sources on the slopes of Mount Mazama assure a consistent flow all year so even in the dry weeks of early fall, mist from the falls waters a green and mossy grotto surrounded by tall trees. The falls are not far from Highway 230, which originated in the 1860s as the John Day Trail, used by prospectors heading from the Rogue River valley to the goldfields in eastern Oregon. National Creek Falls was a favorite stopover point on the journey.
