The hike begins close to where Muir Creek merges its flow with the Rogue River. This lower section of Muir Creek meanders lazily through a wetland valley that supports herds of elk and, unfortunately, seasonal cattle range. The trail section described keeps close to the creek and would be easy were it not probable that you would have scramble over a number of large, downed trees. In at least one section, the trail is slipping down a steep bluff. The destination is a trailside camp with a partial view of a waterfall on Mill Creek’s east fork. Highway 230 is not so far away across the creek, out of sight but not necessarily out of hearing range.
