The obscure Lava Butte Trail is a short but steep ascent to a forested summit with limited views. It’s best done as an addition to another day hike or as an outing from a nearby campground. In fact, you'll need to park at the entrance to the Paradise Creek Campground and walk through the campground to the trailhead. The most challenging part of the hike is near the beginning: the single-log footbridge on the Wind River was washed off its moorings, and you’ll have to ford the wide but shallow river or find slippery logs to walk across. Also, the trail is not regularly maintained, so expect a few downed trees.
