Three alpine lakes lie secluded in their individual cirques on a high granite ridge above the Eagle Creek valley. Each lake has a different character. Perhaps Lookingglass Lake is the better known and most popular. At high water, it is a photogenic sight surrounded by granite slopes, but like some other Wallowa lakes, it's also a reservoir, with waters artificially raised by a dam. When the water level is low, an unsightly muddy shore appears. Culver Lake is the least known of the three, set in a large cirque with a swampy outlet. Bear Lake is a pretty little natural lake with nearby broad views over the Eagle Creek valley. You can visit all three in a day trip, but it's best to backpack in. If you're a lake fan and want to camp up higher, choose one of the lakes and have trout for dinner! You could also camp at the Eagle Creek Meadow and do a day hike up to the cirques.
