Judge Waldo Tree Loop Hike

Overview

This hike takes you on a tour of the Blue Lake (or Blue Canyon) Basin, one of the three major lake basins in the Sky Lakes Wilderness. You'll pass several of the main lakes in the basin before arriving at Island Lake , where you'll find Judge John Breckinridge Waldo's name carved on a tree, along with the monikers of other members of his party, a deed one of them committed in the year 1888 when they were camped there. While today we discourage such defacement of nature, this is a historic site that commemorates Oregon's first native-born Supreme Court justice. Waldo, an early voice for wilderness conservation in Oregon, loved to spend his summers exploring the Cascades, and in 1888 he and his companions traveled by horseback from Mount Jefferson to Mount Shasta , a trip which culminated in an ascent of Shasta .
