Idaho Snake River Trail Hike

Overview

On the Idaho bank of the Snake River, the Snake River National Recreational Trail #102 runs about 30 miles south from Upper Pittsburg Landing . You will be hiking upstream and passing historic ranches and cabins as you go. The trail does not enter the Hells Canyon Wilderness, which does not reach the shore of the Snake River. (On the Idaho side, the northern boundary of the wilderness is near Pine Bar but the western edge of the wilderness is always a couple hundred feet above the trail.) This description takes you as far as Granite Creek , about two miles north of the southern terminus of the gradually deteriorating trail at Butler Bar. The elevated river bars (deposits from the Missoula Floods at the end of the last Ice Age) and alluvial fans at the mouths of creeks are the best spots for camping, but there is one portion of private land, Kirby Creek Lodge , that is off limits. There are also many places right on the Snake River to camp, but they may be crowded with rafters.
