This hike, beginning far up the South Umpqua River valley, takes you to various sites on the South Umpqua side of the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness. The route passes through old-growth forest that has grown up around breccia-like chunks of debris from a landslide that saw half of Grasshopper Mountain slide away about a thousand years ago. The trail takes you past two of the lakes that formed below Grasshopper Mountain after the landslide. Then you can continue up to the summit, where there used to be a lookout cabin that gave commanding views over the surrounding ridges.
