Although the forest around secluded Ghost Lake was toppled by the May 18th, 1980, eruption of Mount Saint Helens , small trees, then buried under eight feet of snow survived and formed the nucleus of a recovering woodland. In addition, a section of the old-growth forest near the lake was sheltered from the blast, so on a section of the Boundary Trail, you will be passing through these survivors. Other survivors of the massive explosion were the cutthroat trout in the lake, originally stocked decades earlier, and now a healthy, self-sustaining population.
