Dolason Prairie to Tall Trees Hike

Overview

The tallest tree in the world is no longer considered to be in the Tall Trees Grove in Redwood National Park, but two former champions, Howard Libbey and Nugget (the world's third tallest tree) are both still there (neither is specifically marked). There are five trees in the grove over 350 feet in height. Although it's not difficult to obtain the permit to pass through the locked gate and do the shorter Tall Trees Hike (except perhaps on busy holiday weekends), the approach described here does not require a day-use permit and takes you from ridgetop heights and prairies for a deeper exploration of redwood country. These trails offer a much more secluded redwood experience than many of the other redwood hikes which are closer to busy highways. Until you get to the Tall Trees Trail, you will have this hike mostly to yourself and can look forward to similar solitude on the return. If you're staying the night, then you can camp on a gravel bar in Redwood Creek: note however that most backpackers use the flat Redwood Creek Trail to access the Tall Trees Grove , a much easier hike but much more popular!
