This loop, using the Cook and Green, Pacific Crest, and Horse Camp trails, is just east of the Red Buttes Wilderness in the California Siskiyous. You'll be getting views as you make the Pacific Crest Trail traverse above the headwaters of Seiad Creek. Secluded little Echo Lake is just off the Horse Camp Trail. This description assumes you are doing the loop clockwise, which makes the gain more gradual. It's locally more popular to do the loop counter-clockwise (as described in Sullivan's Southern Oregon guide) so you get the 3.9 mile, 3500-foot gain out of the way first. While you're less likely to lose the Horse Camp Trail #958 coming up it, just be aware that it's the steepest trail in these parts.
