Elk Flat to Wenaha River Hike

Overview

The Elk Flat Trail #3241 runs immediately into the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness and drops 2,000 feet to the South Fork Wenaha River just above Wenaha Forks. The trail is well maintained and well graded as several pack trains a year use it to ferry rafters’ equipment down to camps by the river. (It’s a 22-mile float down to Troy from Wenaha Forks.) The trail begins at Elk Flat, where there are dispersed campsites. The name of the flat is not a misnomer: This area supports one of the densest populations of elk in the United States, and the occasional small wolf pack and moose pass through to boot!
