Eagle Lake lies nestled in a long granodiorite cirque at the head of Eagle Creek and from a campsite perch at the lake's outlet, hikers can admire the classic glacial valley with high cirques on either side. Needle Point , one of the Wallowas' numerous 9,000-foot peaks, rises directly above the lake. The hike to the lake is straightforward, passing up the valley and above the picturesque Eagle Creek Meadow on a well-graded trail. The lake is one of the "reservoirs" of the southern Wallowas, dammed in the 1940s to raise water levels to feed irrigation ditches that service the farmlands outside the national forest. The dam increased the lake's depth to 100 feet, and it is home to some sizable brook trout. Good campsites are limited, so try to get there early in the day to bag a spot, especially on a summer weekend.
