Cooper Creek Loop Hike

Overview

The 166-acre Cooper Creek Reservoir is backed up against an earthen dam which was constructed int he 1950s to control flooding and provide some of Sutherlin’s drinking water. A 6.2 mile trail runs around the reservoir in undulating fashion. The southern portion of the trail was completed in 2010 by the local Rotarians. The northern section, which runs below Cooper Creek Road, was finished in 2022, and was worked on by various groups. A set of of short mountain bike courses intersects with the trail on the north side. The reservoir is very popular with local fishermen although it’s not recommended to consume anything caught because of mercury in the mine tailings upstream. The trail is marked every half-mile, and this description follows counter to the distance markers, heading along the north side of the reservoir first.
