The hike up to Burger Pass offers a good introduction to the topography of the southwestern Wallowas. The Elk Creek Trail transitions after a couple of miles to more open slopes. Then there are lovely white granite slopes as you traverse below China Cap , and the views from Burger Pass take in most of the southern Wallowas. There are many options from here for those who are backpacking, but day hikers may want to descend from the pass and extend their outing by taking the Sand Pass Trail to the upper Burger Meadows and Sand Pass itself.
