Overview
Trail development in the McDonald Research Forest has continued apace in recent years, and this longer loop takes advantage of the Bonzai and Dave’s trails to reach the summit of Vineyard Mountain . The latter trail is named after Dave ‘Condor’ Bareham, a tireless advocate for these trails. You can return to the trailhead via several shorter but connecting trails near the Peavy Arboretum. Some sections of this hike are also on forest roads, but you’re unlikely to encounter a vehicle. Stay on the trails as poison oak flourishes everywhere in this forest and going off-trail can also disturb research studies.
