Bolt Mountain, a classic Siskiyou prominence of ancient and rubbly serpentine and peridotite, rises on a steady slope above the Applegate River and offers views to the Rogue and Applegate valleys and beyond. Mountain bikers used to connect to the summit via trails from Stringer Gap, but a relatively new (2005) trail runs from Fish Hatchery Park to the top. The trail ascends gradually, rising from mixed forest up more open slopes of Jeffery pine, buckbrush, and manzanita. The lower section of the trail is part of Josephine County’s Fish Hatchery Park , so you will still have to pay the $5 entrance fee to park at the trailhead.
