Awbrey Butte dominates Bend’s northern skyline, and the juniper slopes drop to a 250-foot-deep canyon carved by the Deschutes River. You can’t actually get to the top of Awbrey Butte: the summit is surrounded by a fence that protects an array of communications towers. However, this hike takes you right along that fence. You’ll begin at the Deschutes River and hike above it using the pipeline road of the former Tumalo Feed Canal. Then neighborhood trails take you up through spacious suburbs with lots of natural vegetation until you get close to the summit. The descent to the Deschutes is mostly on sidewalks.
