Mount Adams Loop Hike

Overview

This alpine circuit has its challenges, not the least being the limited window each summer/fall when you can access the restricted area on the east side of Mount Adams , which is within the Yakama Nation. Lately, public access to this part of the reservation, Tract D, has been for about a month at the end of summer, but the dates will change every year, so pay attention to these (check the Friends of Mount Adams website). There’s a camping fee ($30/night), and you’ll need to mail a check with a letter specifying your itinerary to Yakama Nation Tribal Forestry (see details below). There are only two places in the Yakama backcountry you are permitted to camp: Avalanche Valley and Sunrise Camp . It is important to follow the Yakama rules as abusing them might result in a complete revocation of public access.
