Overview
Six sets of thundering waterfalls cascade down the Muddy River's Lava Canyon, some more visible than others. A steep trail takes you down the canyon's west rim to the last viewpoint. This perch is atop a narrow lava fin called The Ship , and it offers a view up the gorge to the lowest set of falls. The excursion, although short, should be avoided by those with small kids and dogs, as well as anyone without a good sense of balance. There are two ladders to scale, one of them 30 feet, and there are several spots along the route where an untoward slip might prove fatal.
