Overview
Two short trails in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument’s Painted Hills Unit start near each other and can easily be combined. The longer hike, only 1.6 miles roundtrip from its trailhead, heads gradually up to a viewpoint on the Carroll Rim . On the way up, you get excellent views of a basin of the colorfully banded Painted Hills and the long ridge of Sutton Mountain . A much shorter hike from the Painted Hills Overlook Trailhead leads up an old road to closer views of the same colorful basin.
