Painted Cove-Leaf Hill-Red Scar Knoll Hikes

Overview

These three very short trails lie on the west side of the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. All three are worth a stop (you’ll need to drive between the trailheads), with the Painted Cove Trail and the Red Scar Knoll Trail taking you to more “painted” hummocks, while the Leaf Hill Trail visits a source of botanical fossils from 33 million years ago.
