Mount Thielsen ’s prominent “lightning rod” summit horn is a standout feature of Oregon’s southern Cascades and dominates the Cascade crest east of Diamond Lake . The first part of this hike, an evenly graded 3 ½ miles up through montane forest, is straightforward. From the junction with the Pacific Crest Trail, you’re on a well-defined (and well-used) climber’s path that braids and scrambles up, with views in all directions, to a high-level perch known as Chicken Ledge. From the ledge, you can contemplate whether to negotiate the final 80 foot pitch up the south face of the horn, a Class 3 or 4 scramble, to the actual summit.
