Mount Scott is the highest point near the rim of Crater Lake and the 10th highest peak in the Oregon Cascades. It thus offers expansive views not only to the lake itself but all up and down the Cascades, from Mount Shasta to South Sister . The trail to the summit and shuttered lookout cabin is nicely graded, heading up through a whitebark pine forest and taking six switchbacks up to the summit ridge. It’s a popular outing, so expect the trail to be crowded any decent day in the summer although you’ll experience more solitude if you begin in the cool hours of the early morning. Bear in mind also that this area gets many feet of snow, and it takes the entire summer for it to melt off.
