Mount McLoughlin , the sixth highest peak in Oregon’s Cascade Range (after Mount Hood , the Three Sisters , and Mount Jefferson ), and 11th overall in the state, dominates the landscape in southern Oregon. Its pretty conical shape presents an attractive picture when mantled with snow, but hikers have quite a long season to attempt the summit, sometimes stretching well into the fall. The hike begins on the level, but the final two-thirds of the route is on a relentlessly steep trail with a loose and rocky tread. Closer to the actual summit, you will be using your hands more on short scrambles. Views from the top on a clear day will extend from the Three Sisters to Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen. Start early, and give yourself a lot of time as the initial section of the descent will also be slow. Fit hikers will take six to seven hours; average hikers may take up to nine hours.
