Mount Howard Loop Hike

Overview

A 19-car gondola tramway carries you upward 3,700 feet, the steepest such ride in North America. At the upper terminal, there’s a restaurant and viewing balcony. A loop trail, with several stunning viewpoints, carries you over the summit of Mount Howard in an alpine environment of gravelly flower gardens and wind-abraded firs and pines. Interpretive signs explain the nature at regular intervals. The area is popular and crowded, but this excursion is unique in Oregon and well worth the price of the ride. In 2016, Mount Howard and East Peak were designated national natural landmarks because of their pristine natural condition and endemic vegetation.
