The Zumwalt Prairie in Wallowa County consists of 160,000 acres of bunchgrass prairie, the largest such habitat in North America, with much of it converted to grain crops or cattle grazing. However, The Nature Conservancy’s Zumwalt Prairie Preserve of 33,000 acres is managed for its natural habitat only. That said, cattle do range these rolling hills and, along with resident elk, maintain the “natural” balance that the grassland needs from large ungulates. There are four short trails in The Nature Conservancy's preserve, the northernmost being the Horned Lark Loop. Visitors are not permitted to hike off-trail, and dogs are not permitted on the hiking routes.
