In the early 20th century, the brothers Wilkes and Daniel Tripp “salted” a claim in the upper North Fork Imnaha River drainage, brought in equipment, and sold stocks for the enterprise. They even built a wagon road to access a “townsite” and the mining area. How much the Tripp brothers cadged out of gullible investors is not known, but the wagon road has been reclaimed as a trail and offers access to the headwaters of the North and Middle Fork Imnaha rivers. The goal of this hike is to visit parts of these drainages and loop around Boner Flat , an almost lost trail that has seen recent logouts by the Wallowa Mountains Hells Canyon Trails Association. Boner Flat will be the most challenging section of the hike as the tread itself is less used and sometimes hard to follow; thus, a GPS with a good track is highly recommended. Take note also that the first three miles or so of this hike was scoured by the 2022 Nebo Fire and the 1989 Canal Fire.
