Overview
The Shellburg Creek Loop takes you away from the waterfalls in the Shellburg State Recreation Area and up into quiet woods that were less affected by the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire. Your descent on the east side of the loop will be very brushy in spots (as it always was) and drenching, on a wet day, from the overhanging vegetation! Also on this side, however, is a tract of unburned woodland along Shellburg Creek’s north branch, a stark contrast to the devastation in other parts of the area. You could, once you reach the junction with the August Mountain Trail , continue on the August Mountain Loop Hike , making for a bigger loop of 4.3 miles and visits to both Shellburg Falls and Lower Shellburg Falls . Another option is to tack on the Shellburg Falls Hike from the trailhead.
