The craggy prominence of Mitchell Point looms above the Columbia River, the last big landmark before you reach Hood Driver if you’re driving east from Portland. In 2025, the 655-foot-long modern version of the famed Mitchell Point Tunnel was opened to the public, with five windows (mirroring the original highway version) allowing views across the Columbia River. The tunnel, which replaces the older version destroyed in 1966 due to the construction of I-84, is drilled through the lower prominence of Mitchell Spur , which you’ll also visit on this hike. The tunnel also affords the opportunity for a loop around and up to Mitchell Point from the east, a somewhat secret journey at present, all on public lands, but which may become more tried and true in the future. Be aware that poison oak is common all along this route, so wearing long pants and long sleeves is prudent.
