A paved section of the Portland Metro Area’s 40-mile Loop runs between industrial facilities and a Columbia River beach and the Sandy River, the path following the top of a levee that skirts the Troutdale Reynolds Industrial Park. Both sides of the paved trail were part of the Superfund cleanup following the demolition of the Reynolds Aluminum Plant (the site now occupied by a FedEx Package Distribution Center) after its closure in 2002. The pavement was extended to the I-84 bridge over the Sandy River in 2024, and the path was christened the Ch'ak Ch'ak Trail ( ch'ak ch'ak is Chinook Wawa for bald eagle). You'll begin this hike at Depot Park in Troutdale and take a newly opened (2025), paved trail through Sharon Nesbit Heritage Park to meet with the Ch'ak Ch'ak Trail, which leads to the levee. Later in the hike, an unpaved trail leads from the levee path through a riparian corridor dominated by cottonwoods to Sundial Beach on the Columbia River. Other trails explore the cottonwood woodlands near 16-acre Company Lake , also part of the Superfund cleanup. The Port of Portland governs much of the area, and No Trespassing signs are posted in certain places to protect wildlife habitat and prevent illegal camping. For a shorter hike to Sundial Beach , you can begin at the Harlow Road Trailhead , Graham Road Trailhead , or Sundial Road Trailhead .
