From a couple of ugly sewage treatment ponds just west of Prineville, an entire wastewater recycling facility has been developed that allows treated wastewater to filter through 15 different ponds of different depths before entering the Crooked River and eventually the Columbia. Native riparian vegetation has been planted around the ponds, and over five miles of paths go around and between them, making this a very popular walking destination for locals and visitors alike. Bird life is abundant here, and there are 13 interpretive kiosks, along with benches and restrooms at the parking area. Make sure you carry binoculars!
