Battle Ax

Overview

Battle Ax is a high summit on the southern edge of the Bull of the Woods Wilderness. In profile, from the east and west, the prominence does indeed resemble the blade of an ax, but local legend says that the mountain is really named after a popular chewing tobacco brand of the 1890s. An alidade was put up here in 1918, and in 1922 a cupola-style lookout was constructed. This lookout was replaced in 1953 but this last incarnation was decommissioned in the 1960s. At the old lookout site, only a few concrete foundation pillars remain.
